Entry Three: Interview With ELL Teacher

Entry Three: Interview With ELL Teacher For this entry, I have decided to interview my amazing mentor teacher - Kayla Shaw. Ms.Shaw is a third grade science and a ELAR teacher. She has been in the classroom for three years and has worked with all different kinds of students. This being said, she has worked with a handful of English Language Learners and has some great insight into what it is like teaching in an ELL classroom! In her interview, Ms. Shaw mentions that she is currently teaching at a district that uses an early-exit program for their ELL students. According to Wright, the Transitional Bilingual Education program, also known as early-exit, is the most common type of bilingual program in the United States  (Wright, 2015, p.97). The goal of this program is to "transition ELLs to an English-medium classroom as quickly as possible" ( Wright, 2015, p.97). Ms. Shaw mentions that her district tries to get students out of the program by third grade or at t...

Entry Two: Interview With ELL

Entry Two: Interview With ELL For this entry, I have decided to interview a close friend of mine - Josselin Maravilla. Ms.Maravilla is currently a senior at The University of Houston and is a student teacher at CFISD. When she was just one year old, she moved to the United States from her native country, El Salvador. Growing up Ms.Maravilla spoke primarily Spanish and wasn't exposed to her second language until she entered school. This being said, Ms.Maravilla was considered an ELL in school and throughout her interview, we delve into her experiences and emotions towards her bilingual program.  As mentioned, Josselin Maravilla moved to the United States when she was just one. Until enrolled in school, she did not speak any other language besides Spanish. Ms. Maravilla tells us in her interview that she was automatically placed in a bilingual program in preschool and was then considered an ELL. This is where Ms. Maravilla's journey in learning English began. "An...

Entry One: Introduction

Entry One: Introduction Hi there! ¡Hola! Salut! My name is Alexander Iglesias, and I am now a senior at the University of Houston. I am currently majoring in Teaching & Learning with an EC-6 certification, in hopes of becoming a 3rd grade teacher. As you will see in my video, I do speak three different languages - English, Spanish and French. Growing up I lived in a Spanish speaking household in which Spanish was the only language I spoke. Both of my parents are native to Spanish speaking countries, so they did not learn English until they immigrated here to the United States. This being said, I was not exposed to English as much until I started going to public school. Once in public school, I was labeled an ELL and an ESL student. It wasn’t until recently when I read Wright’s Foundations for Teaching English Language Learners , that I learned that I had more than just two labels. During my elementary years, I was in bilingual classes in which I was taught both my nati...
